What Do I Need To Bring With Me To Pre-Admit?

Driver’s license or pictured I.D., Insurance card(s), Deposit (if required), ALL medications, vitamins and supplements in their labeled bottles, and your pre-admit folder given to you at your consultation.

How Long Will Preadmission Take?

Please allow approximately ONE hour for preadmission. You may decrease your time by visiting your designated facility’s website and completing the online pre-admit/registration information.

What Time Should I Arrive At The Facility The Morning Of Surgery?

Your designated facility will contact you the day before your procedure to inform you of what time to arrive. Please arrive on time as arriving late will delay your surgery start time.

Will I Have To Stay Overnight At The Hospital?

Most procedures are outpatient, meaning you will go home the same day as your procedure. There are some surgeries that will require you to stay overnight.

How Should I Prepare For Surgery?

  • The facility will contact you the day before surgery to inform you of what time to arrive in the morning. Make sure you have a responsible adult to bring you to and from the facility.
  • Take a shower using the Hibiclens soap that was provided at your pre-admit appointment. If no soap is given, you may use an antibacterial soap such as Dial.
  • DO NOT eat or drink anything after midnight.
  • DO NOT shave the site.
  • DO NOT drink alcohol for at LEAST 24 hours prior to your surgery.

When Should I Discontinue My Blood Thinners?

Discontinue taking any blood thinners or blood thinning products (including aspirin or aspirin containing products such as Motrin, Ibuprofen, Excedrin, Advil, Alka-Seltzer, Naprosyn etc.) for at LEAST 5 days prior to the procedure unless otherwise specified.

Am I Allowed To Take My Daily Medications The Morning Of Surgery?

You may take blood pressure medications (except those containing diuretics), heart, or epileptic medications with a small sip of water. If you have any other questions regarding medication, please contact the office.

What Should I Do The Morning Of Surgery?

Please arrive on time and ensure you have a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure, wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing (a button up shirt is recommended). DO NOT wear jewelry, makeup or nail polish to the procedure. (All body jewelry must be removed prior to the procedure.)

What Should I Bring With Me To My Procedure?

All medications (including vitamins and supplements) in their original bottles, your surgery folder that was given to you at your consultation, contact lens case, glasses, denture cups, and CPAP machine (if applicable).

When can I begin to eat a regular diet?

You will start with liquids while still at the facility, and add some solid foods to your diet as you are able to tolerate them.

When will I have my follow up appointment?

You can expect a follow up appointment at our office in 1-2 weeks from the date of your procedure. If the facility does not make a post op appointment for you, please contact our office to schedule one.

How long do I need to leave my bandages on?

Please leave the clear, waterproof dressing with gauze beneath it on for three days. At that time, you may remove the clear, waterproof dressing and gauze. DO NOT remove the white strips (steristrips) that are directly on your skin. They will be removed at your postoperative visit.

When can I shower after surgery?

You may shower when you are able to stand without assistance for longer than 10 minutes. This is to avoid slipping or falling while in the shower. Your bandages are waterproof and safe to get wet unless otherwise specified.

What can I do to help with soreness/swelling?

You may use ice packs on sore areas for intervals of 10-15 minutes at a time.

I am having trouble using the bathroom since surgery. What should I do?

If you are experiencing constipation, you may take any over-the-counter medications such as stool softeners, Dulcolax, Colace, or Metamucil as directed. Increasing fiber by eating fruits, vegetables, and beans or increasing your water intake is also helpful.

When can I drive after surgery?

You may drive your vehicle once you have discontinued the use of pain medication.

How long will I be out of work?

The amount of time needed to recover will depend on what type of procedure you have, your current health status, age, and pain tolerance. Please contact our nurse to discuss when you will be released to return to work.
